Below
are a few pictures from the West 6th Street Artist's Market. The
market is open every weekend (weather permitting). It is located
near Katz's deli on West 6th Street. When walking around the market,
I found a wide variety of art forms (oil paintings, jewelry, photography,
textiles, sculpture). Some artists are there almost every weekend.
Others rotate through on a regular basis, so there is always something
new to see.
I
especially enjoy having an opportunity to speak with the artist,
and have them share information about their work. As I was admiring
Drew Mounce's
work, he began explaining the meaning of one of his pieces to
me and a few others. When he pointed out a few elements of the
work, there was a collective 'oohhh...' when we all suddenly saw
the image from another perspective. We then all put on a pair
of glasses that Drew provided and a group 'wow' came forth. He
explained a glazing technique that he uses to provide an almost
3-D effect to the artwork. This personal attention and new understanding
is not something you achieve in galleries when an artist's work
is sold by another individual. I encourage anyone in Austin to
check out the market, learn about some of our talented local artists,
and support them.
