Brushy
Creek Trail
Directions
From Austin - From IH-35, head north to 620. Head west on 620. Turn
right on Great Oaks Drive. Go through several stop signs until you
reach Brushy Creek Road. Turn left on Brushy Creek. Parking will
be immediately to your left. This will start you at the east side
of the trail.
From
Austin - From Mopac, head north to Parmer Lane. Head west on Parmer
until you reach Brush Creek Rd. Turn right. The entrance to the
park will be on your right. This will start you at the west side
of the trail (Brushy Creek Lake Park).
I
enjoy cycling, and I enjoy riding on everything from the Veloway
to the Greenbelt, but I haven't been very successful in convincing
my daughter or wife to go to the Greenbelt because they think
biking should be leisurely, not an active sport requiring you
to navigate around obstacles, climb hills, or jump off anything.
They
love the Veloway, but it's a trek for those of us living in north
Austin. So, I'm always trying to scout out new locations up north
that meet everyone's requirements. I stumbled upon Brushy Creek
Trail, and have found myself heading out there more and more.
My wife enjoys it because there isn't too much traffic on it (her
chief complaint about the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail). My 10
year old daughter enjoys it because the trail begins and ends
with playscapes, and includes one in the middle, Olson Meadows
Park. Brushy Creek Lake Park, which is located at the east trail
head even includes a couple of pavilions and some water features
for the kids to play in during the summer months.
I,
personally, am more concerned about the trail itself. This is
an easy ride. The trail is approximately 2.7 miles. About two-thirds
of it is packed granite the other third is paved concrete. The
grade is under 5 degrees for 98% of the trail and it averages
10 feet or more in width. The trail is ideal for kids, families
pulling bike trailers, joggers, etc.
