Handicapped children are finding new freedom on horseback at the Handicapped Equestrian Learning Program, Inc., (HELP) Center. Since 1984, HELP has grown from a humble pilot program to a member facility of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).

Riding therapy has been utilized by centers throughout the United States for over twenty years. It is a proven method to exercise, mobilize and motivate the mind and body. It emphasizes the rider’s abilities, not disabilities.

HELP’s certified instructors work closely with other professionals and parents to individualize lessons to maximize each rider’s abilities. This team effort challenges riders to learn and use horsemanship skills.

Safety is a major concern. Each student is taught by an instructor and aided by leaders and sidewalkers as needed. The horses for this program have been carefully schooled and are exceptionally gentle and loving.

Types of disabilities do not exclude an individual’s participation. Currently riders with cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, autism, and visual impairments are experiencing the joys of riding and warm bond between horse and rider.

HELP’s successes are not miracles, but result from the caring and cooperation of many people. Riders, families, volunteers, and sponsors are having amazing results. If you have the time, talent, or treasure to become a part of the HELP’s team and share in our success, we'd love to hear from you.

I Saw a Child

Charles

I saw a child who couldn’t walk,
sit on a horse, laugh and talk.
Then ride it through a field of daisies
and yet he could not walk unaided.

I saw a child no legs below,
sit on a horse, and make it go
through woods of green
and places he had never been
to sit and stare, except from a chair.

I saw a child who could only crawl
mount a horse and sit up tall.
Put it through degrees of paces
and laugh at the wonder in our faces.

I saw a child born into strife
take up and hold the reins of life
and that same child was heard to say
thank God for showing me the way.

What can you do?

The HELP Center is constantly on the lookout for volunteers. Volunteers are needed to do a variety of tasks, anything from leading a horse to repair and construction on the property.

On the other hand, you may be looking for an opportunity for your child. Although there currently is a waiting list to become a rider at the HELP Center, vacancies do periodically arise. And, the opportunities for more children to ride increase as the number of volunteers increase.

If you don't have the time to volunteer, but would still like to assist the HELP Center in some way, donations are greatly appreciated. The HELP Center receives the majority of its funds for operation through donations made by individuals as well as local organizations. The cost to feed, care, and house the horses at the center can be quite substantial. Although most donations are monetary, some individuals have donated feed, medicine, and veterinary services. Any help is welcome.
