Ruthie Foster

First and foremost, I need to state upfront that Ruthie Foster has an incredible voice. That was evident right away with Runaway Soul, the title track of Ruthie's latest release. It was also evident that Ruthie has a true talent for song writing After listening to the complete CD, several songs really jumped out at me. First, Smalltown Blues, which has a contagious rhythm. And secondly, Home, which has to be destined for radio play. Home has a comforting, mellow melody and truly stands out as the crowning jewel on Runaway Soul. Looking at the liner notes, I noticed that the songs I enjoyed the most were all written by Ruthie herself.

The CD also has a couple of traditionals, which I think showcase her voice, but like many traditionals become too repetitive for my personal taste. If you are the type of person who enjoys standing up in church and belting out a few hymns, you'll be singing right along with Woke Up This Mornin' and Death Came a Knockin' (Travelin' Shoes).

When I receive a CD to review, I often receive a press packet or release with it. I avoid reading the materials until I've had an opportunity to evaluate the CD because I don't want to be influenced by it. After taking a few notes about Runaway Soul, I read the letter I received with it. The following is taken from the letter. I wanted to include it because I thought the description was right on, and the comparisons between Ruthie and other musicians are accurate.

Ruthie Foster's songs are a remarkable hybrid of blues, gospel, roots and folk music rich with honest spirituality and emotion. Ruthie's simply amazing vocal abilities have critics comparing her to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin.

Bottom line: Ruthie will be making her mark on the Austin music scene. If she keeps putting out music like that found on Runaway Soul, it'll be a big mark.
