Kevin Fowler

Each morning when I get up, my wife has the radio turned to some country music station. After being in Texas for a little over a decade, I've come to tolerate country music pretty well, and I've even been known to buy a country CD every now and then. But still, as soon as she leaves, chances are I'm moving up or down the dial. If any song from Kevin Fowlers latest CD came on, that country station would be safe for a few minutes longer.

The new Kevin Fowler CD High on the Hog meets all the requirements for a great country CD: a couple of drinkin' songs, a healthy serving of two-steps, and some cleverly written lyrics about bad relationships.

The first couple of twangy notes at the beginning of the CD let you know without doubt that this is a down-home county CD. Then Senorita Mas Fina catches you off guard with its Jimmy Buffet feel. It describes, with just enough Spanish that any gringo would understand, the pursuit of a bordertown girl.

I think I enjoyed this CD as much as I did because I was able to personally identify with so many of the songs about past relationships. There's a Fool Born Everyday tells of an ex-girlfriend who won't have any problems finding a new love. Not Lovin' Anymore explains why the 'next girl in line doesn't have a chance in hell' because his last relationship has taught him not to leave himself open and vulnerable.

The Lord Loves the Drinkin' Man and All the Tequila in Tijuana, the latter being a duet with Willie Nelson serve as the requisite songs about tossin' back a few. Personally, I think Willie Nelson is a fine songwriter, but his voice has always left something to be desired. So, I was pleased that Willie was able to contribute to Kevin's CD without overpowering the vocals on the duet.

All in all, Kevin Fowler has been able to put out yet another fine piece of work. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kevin's name turn up again in the Austin Music Awards.
