Jacinta

Review by Karen Cooper

Dave Jorgenson Musician Jacinta seems to feel at home no matter what the venue. The American born Aussie came to Austin in March 2002, hoping to lure South By South West (SWSX) Music Festival audiences to her free-spirited style of electrocopic (mixture of electronic, rock, and pop) dance music. She quickly felt at ease in the Live Music Capitol, making Austin her first home in the U.S. since leaving Australia.

Make no mistake, Jacinta is a musician. Labeling the artist as just a vocalist excludes her other abilities. She's a Jill of all trades, combining her keyboard and string talents with a keen knack for arranging, programming and mixing music. Later this year, she'll throw actress into the mix. "All You Can Eat" directed by local Austinite, Ben Torres, is Jacinta's first film debut and stint into acting. She not only plays the principal character, Autumn, but also provides five original titles for the movie. The movie began production in September 2002 and will likely complete production in Winter or early Spring 2003.

Jacinta writes all of her own lyrics and music, crediting 1980s new wave, pop and rock music as her early influences. "My music has bits and chunks of different styles of music," says the artist whose website www.chunkymusic.com details career highlights. More recently, Moby, Prodigy, and the Chemical Brothers are artists she most models her music towards.

The Lounge (located in Austin's Warehouse District) was an ideal setting for Jacinta's debut. Understated and intimate, the bar really enabled listeners to get a feel not only for the music but also for the artist's personality. She began her set with a little technical difficulty, playing in the dark for her first few songs until some problems with the lighting were resolved. As Jacinta tussled through her first two songs with keyboard trouble, what left a lasting impression was how much she really loves music and performing. You really get the sense that Jacinta's music makes her happy; and in turn when you're in the audience the experience is enjoyable even if her style of music may not be what you typically listen to. The most memorable songs, Now That I Am With You, Step Into the Sunshine, and Fly, reflect most of her music style. Step Into the Sunshine (dance mix), with a dance disco-tech feel, was an audience favorite. Jacinta's single Fly has had some commercial success. You can visit her website to download one of several mixes. Some of her keyboard music is mindful of the early 1980s rock sound in an electronic medium. It trips over your ear as though you've heard it before, or something like it. After being part of a band for few years, Jacinta prefers being solo. Unfortunately, the same traits that make her so varied a musician can also be somewhat of a distraction to her music. It's very easy to lose sight of the music while watching her juggle multiple tasks - vocalist, keyboards, guitar, synthesizer, etc. Hopefully, as Jacinta takes on other venues in Austin such a little wrinkle will iron itself out. Keep an eye out for the busy artist, who hopes to perform in SXSW, appear in her first movie, and introduce a full length CD this spring.
