Like most Austinites, I've hit the clubs on 6th Street and seen my fair share of blues guitarists. About three quarters of them could swap band members and it wouldn't even phase them because the bass lines and beat are identical on every other song. Fortunately, the Alex Henley Band does not fit into that category. I have to admit that the first track on their self-titled EP didn't really do much for me, aside from Alex's solo which convinced me that I had something to look forward to on the other five songs. The rest of the CD really impressed me. Alex has strong writing skills and a great sense of finding balance in his songs. Even though its clearly evident that he is blessed with the abilty to crank out some flawless solos, Alex is able to showcase his talent without overshadowing his band mates, Hamilton Nabors (bass) and Greg Butler (drums). A couple songs are straight-forward Texas blues, while songs such as So Excited and Alone seem to be a fusion of blues and jazz guitar. Stand is a wonderfully written piece with beautiful lyrics and equally impressive instrumentation. Bottom line - The Alex Henley Band has a sound that is easily integrated into the Austin blues/rock music scene. But they have a sound that is distinct enough not to be lost in the crowd. I'd encourage you to check out the band's work on MP3.com. I predict you'll be as impressed as I am.
