The Capital City of Texas: Austin

The area that would become Austin was settled in the early 1800s on the bank of the Colorado River. The city was originally named Waterloo and became the capital of Texas in 1839. Not long after the founding of the city it was named after Stephen F. Austin. Today, Austin is a center of technology and business that is home to many companies. The nickname “Silicon Hills” was adopted in the early 1990s in regards to the many technology corporations that call the city home.

Austin’s music scene is centered around many 6th Street clubs and the South by Southwest music festival (though there are many more music festivals in the city). Austin City Limits is the longest running concert program on American television and is recorded at the University of Texas Austin Campus. The city’s music festivals and Austin City Limits attract musicians from all over the world.

Austin has a real pleasant climate. The summers are normally hot with temperatures usually in the mid-90s and the winters are mild and dry. Austin is one of the fastest growing areas in Texas.
